What Would You Give to Succeed?

-November 18th, 2016-

I found this great blog the other day titled I’d Give Anything.earlyampractice

I thought it was so bang on that I had to share it. To give you a quick glimpse into it this is the opening quote:

“Many people have the ambition to succeed; they may even have a special aptitude for their job.  And yet they do not move ahead.  Why? Perhaps they think that since they can master their job, there is no need to master themselves.” John Stevenson

Basically it discusses the discipline needed to succeed at the highest level of sport, of the sacrifices an elite level athlete must make to reach their goal.

  • Your friends want to go out on Friday night? You better be prepared to stay home and get to bed early because you need to train early Saturday morning
  • You have to stay 30 minutes after practice to work on a new skill
  • You eat breakfast every single day. A healthy breakfast that you prepare
  • You have to face criticism from friends as not being ‘fun’ because you focus on your training ahead of all else

These were just a few mentioned in the article.

I cannot tell you how many times in my years as a Strength Coach I have talked to parents and athletes that tell me they want to be the absolute best and are willing to do whatever it takes, until it is time to do whatever it takes. Then they can’t follow through.

They cancel a training session to go to a party with their friends.

They miss a practice because they have homework they didn’t do on the weekend because they were on vacation.

They only slept for 5 hours because they were up playing video games with friends.

They didn’t eat breakfast or lunch because they didn’t wake up in time.

Success takes time. It takes discipline. It takes hard work. I’ll leave you with the final sentence from the great blog by Coach Jeff Higuera.

Success is not for everyone. You have to dare to be different.  You have to give up everything that makes you comfortable. That takes courage.  But that’s what it takes.
